Title: Living on the edge: Why it's time to rethink storage architecture

Two huge trends are driving the storage market and changing the way organizations are building out storage infrastructure. The first is the proliferation of Flash, which can have an enormous impact on overall storage performance and the second is the push towards the cloud to handle peak compute demands and to enable the consolidation of data center resources. Unfortunately, the traditional model of storage design as well as aging product architectures provide the most costly way to take advantage of the newest storage media, have limited scalability - especially in HPC environments - and are unable to remove the latency roadblock that limits the expansion of cloud for any type of primary application. Avere's chief technologists will discuss a new way to build storage networks using an Edge-Core architecture that allows maximizes performance, throughput and scalability, uses storage media in the most efficient way possible, and will enable the use of cloud computing and storage in a distributed environment for performant applications.

As CTO and Co-Founder of Avere Systems and an acknowledged expert in network file system architectures, Mike is responsible for driving Avere's technology vision and architecture. Previously Mike was VP and Chief Architect at NetApp working on Data ONTAP GX, the technology Mike developed while Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Spinnaker Networks. Before Spinnaker, he was a Distinguished Engineer at FORE Systems working on LAN Emulation for ATM and several Ethernet to ATM bridge products. Prior to FORE, he co-founded and served as Chief File System Architect at Transarc Corporation [now part of IBM]. Earlier in his career, Mike worked on versions of Carnegie Mellon University's Andrew File System as well as the Andrew Toolkit, an OLE-like windowing toolkit. Mike received an S.B. in Mathematics and an S.B. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in Computer Science.
