    Worldwide HPC Server Revenue Grows 3.9% in Third Quarter, IDC Reports

    Worldwide factory revenue for the high performance computing (HPC) technical server market grew by 3.9% to $2.8 billion in the third quarter of 2016 (3Q16), compared with $2.7 billion in the prior-year third quarter. Revenue for the first three quarters of 2016 totaled $8.1 billion, up 3.4% from the $7.8 billion total for the same period last year, according to new data from International Data Corporation (IDC).

    ANSYS and SGI application engineers worked together to achieve a new world record for scaling ANSYS Fluent on a SGI ICE XA, which is one of the world’s fastest commercial distributed memory supercomputer platforms. The SGI manufacturing team had built a new system for our customer NCAR in the United States called “Cheyenne” and the system was going through its testing phases on our factory floor.

    Amazon Web Services has seeded its cloud with NVIDIA Tesla K80 GPUs to meet the growing demand for accelerated computing across an increasingly-diverse range of workloads. The P2 instance family is a welcome addition for compute- and data-focused users who were growing frustrated with the performance limitations of Amazon’s G2 instances, which are backed by three-year-old NVIDIA GRID K520 graphics cards.

    Nimbix announced plans to expand its performance leadership in cloud supercomputing with the addition of IBM’s recently-launched Power Systems S822LC for HPC platform featuring NVIDIA Pascal GPUs. Nimbix will now put the capabilities of IBM Power Systems for HPC, based on the POWER8 with NVIDIA NVLink interconnect technology processor, and Nimbix’s JARVICE platform in the hands of developers and data scientists to achieve unprecedented performance.

    The first Worldwide Semiannual Security Spending Guide from IDC forecasts worldwide revenues for security-related hardware, software, and services will grow from $73.7 billion in 2016 to $101.6 billion in 2020. This represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.3%, more than twice the rate of overall IT spending growth, over the five-year forecast period. The new spending guide expands on IDC's previous security forecasts by offering greater detail on spending by geography, industry, and technology.

    In August, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced its acquisition of Silicon Graphics International (SGI) in a deal valued at $275 million, or $7.75 per share. In taking on the server and high-performance computer maker, HPE saw long-term growth in the high-performance computing (HPC) industry, which is why it saved SGI from a decade of turmoil that including Chapter 11 in 2009 and  the acquisition of SGI assets by Rackable the same year.

    For all the promise of cloud, there are still segments of IT, such as HPC and many categories of big data analytics that have been resistant to wholesale outsourcing to public cloud resources. At present, cloud computing makes up only 2.4 percent of the HPC market by revenue, and although Intersect360 Research forecast its growth at a robust 10.9 per year, that still keeps it well under five percent throughout the five-year forecast period.
